Guidelines for Application/Renewal of Practicing Certificates for the Year 2022
EVERY new Lawyer/ Advocate who qualifies and is entitled to practice law in Uganda is required to FIRST register as a member of the Uganda Law Society (ULS) by completing and submitting a ULS Membership Registration Form designed for this purpose.
Note: This is necessary for us to have the FULL particulars/ correct record on every member of the Law Societ and also applies, to old members who may not have previously submitted one, want to update or did not fully comply with the requirement as in 2 below;
The ULS Membership Registration Form indicating one’s full particulars of names, status and professional standing as well as details of law firm/company/ institution/or current work place and physical premises, postal address, operational office telephone/fax and cello (mobile) phone contacts, as well as email address and; MUST be accompanied by the following:-
- Certified Certificate of Enrollment
- Certified Degree Certificate
- Certified Bar Course Certificate
- Introduction / Recommendation letter from the current Institution you’re working with.
- Passport photograph (1)
- Certificate of Approval of Chambers for the current year AND/ OR, a Certified Copy of a Letter of Appointment for employed/salaried lawyers, for the firm/institution in which one (is to) practice.
- A ULS Identification Card OR, in its absence, personal appearance by the Lawyer/Advocate for physical identification and submission of one’s bio-data (including posing for a PP photograph) for a ULS ID to issue upon payment of the requisite fee of UGX. 20,000/=.
- Payment of the requisite ULS subscription fee of Ug Sh. 500,000/= and US $20 for EALS.
Guidelines for Renewal of ULS Membership for the Year
Every existing Advocate who qualifies and is entitled to practice law in Uganda is required to FIRST renew their membership with the Uganda Law Society (ULS) annually.
The ULS Membership Registration Form indicating one’s full particulars of names, status and professional standing as well as details of law firm/company/ institution/or current work place and physical premises, postal address, operational office telephone/fax and cello (mobile) phone contacts, as well as email address and; MUST be accompanied by the following:-
Note: This is necessary for us to have the FULL particulars/ correct record on every member of the Law Society. Proof of CLE Compliance issued by the Law Council for the year just ended.
- Settlement of any arrears and any other debts as may be due and owing in the last three (3) years in case of any advocates enrolled more than a year ago OR, evidence of waiver of this requirement as may be granted by the President ULS and, given only upon satisfactory explanation and proof for one to deserve this waiver.
- Payment of the requisite ULS subscription fee of Ug Sh. 500,000/= and US $20 for EALS.
Please Note that:
In some cases, additional requirements may be asked for before one’s registration can be completed. Before one’s payment of one’s membership subscription fee is accepted and, in order to be given clearance to apply and or for renewal of one’s Practicing Certificate, the above requirements MUST be fulfilled by every member unless exempted/waiver granted or cleared by Council represented by the President ULS.
